Legal Aid Department, Hong Kong SAR Government

The Legal Aid Department provides legal representation to eligible applicants by a solicitor. Any person who need legal assistance for court proceedings may apply for legal aid under the Legal Aid Schemes.

Legal aid will be granted if the applicant is able to satisfy the statutory criteria as to the financial eligibility and the merits for taking or defending the legal proceedings.

The scope of Legal Aid Scheme covers the following cases:

    ›  breach of contract ›  professional negligence
    ›  traffic accident claims ›  claims in respect of industrial accidents
    ›  employees' compensation ›  employees' wages and related employment benefits
    ›  seamen's wage claims ›  immigration matters
    ›  Mental Health Review Tribunal cases ›  Coroners inquests involving interests of public justice

To successfully apply for legal aid, you must pass the merits test and the means test.
